FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Signed into Law!

A Surprising, but Wonderful, Food Safety Victory

 

The Center for Foodborne Illness Research & Prevention (CFI) is very pleased that the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. The bill will now be sent to the President for his signature before becoming a law.

 

“The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act has overcome many hurdles,” said Patricia Buck, CFI’s Executive Director, “but its supporters just never gave up – all of us knew that passing this legislation is primary for moving the United States towards a more robust, science- informed food safety system. “

 

Barbara Kowalcyk, CFI’s Food Safety Director, further commented, “As one of the authors of the National Academy of Sciences report, Enhancing Food Safety, I am encouraged with the passage of this legislation – it will provide the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the opportunity to become more proactive about its food oversight responsibilities, which in turn, will help restore confidence and prevent foodborne illness.”

 

Specifically, the bill will require FDA, food processors and producers to identify areas of risk so that preventive measures can be implemented. It also requires FDA to inspect the facilities under its jurisdiction more frequently and has provisions to improve food trace- back systems and foodborne illness surveillance. In addition, the bill requires imported food to meet the same standards as domestically produced food.

 

CFI thanks Congressional Members from both parties who have worked so hard for the passage of this legislation. “It is amazing to have witnessed the strong bi-partisan support that this bill has enjoyed over the past two years,” said Buck. CFI is grateful to all of the Senators and House Members, along with their staff, who worked so diligently to bring this legislation to a successful conclusion in the 111th Congress. “This bill never would have been passed without this type of dedicated leadership,” said Kowalcyk.
